At left is a set of full-banded braces, ca. 1929, fashioned from metals including gold bands on the top teeth. Today's braces may feature translucent brackets and the heat-activated nickel-titanium wires developed through NASA, as shown on the right.

Removable braces can be taken out for cleaning. Although orthodontic removable appliances are usually carried out in early teenagers (Phase 1 Orthodontics), there is no age limit and many adults have orthodontic treatment.
